The Anoto pattern printed on paper makes it possible for the digital pen to record handwriting which then can be stored and sent digitally.
The pattern consists of small dots (100μm in diameter) arranged with a spacing of approximately 0.3 mm on a square grid. The dots are slightly displaced from the grid, each dot in one of four possible positions, thus forming the proprietary Anoto pattern. Each dot carries two bits of information and because the pen registers positions by reading an area of 6 x 6 dots a unique pattern is ensured on a very large area.
The displacement of the dots makes it possible for each pattern area to be identified individually. Thus, if you, for example, license a part of the Anoto pattern it will be possible to extract what has been written and where it is written on the licensed pattern area.
The Anoto pattern is huge. It covers an area of 60 million km2, which exceeds the total area of Europe and Asia combined
A drawing area is a pattern area on which the pen user can draw and write freely. The digital pen handles the pen strokes as plain pen stroke data to be processed by the receiving application . A drawing area can be used for any type of information, such as, illustrations, check boxes, signatures, or uninterpreted notes. In the Forms Design Tool (FDT), which is a design tool provided by Anoto, a drawing area will automatically cover the complete paper product in the design process.
